Warning! Spoilers ahead for Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante / Eagly Double Feature #4!Years after their friendship debuted, fans are finally getting to understand whyVigilanteputsPeacemakeron the pedestal the way he does. Those who watched the live-action DCU series know that Adrian Chase isn’t just a talented (yet sociopathic) crusader for justice, he is 100%obsessed with Peacemaker andfollows him blindly.

But those who have seen the series know that Christopher Smith doesn’t treat Adrian like one would expect a friend to.So why does Vigilante propPeacemaker up so much? The answer comes from one tie-in series, a story overseen and consulted onby DCU architect James Gunn. After realizing he’s been duped, Vigilante thinks about how no one in the world says what they mean and it’s hard for someone like him to read people. Except, that is, for Peacemaker.Vigilante has no problem understanding Peacemaker’s brash and curt words, explaining why Adrian idolizes such an outrageous hero.

Peacemaker season 2 poster-2

Adrian is incredibly upset that he fell for Cannon and Saber’s trick. He notes that this kind of thing happens to him fairly frequently because Vigilante struggles to understand what people say and that’s especially a problem when people don’t say what they mean. The one person who always says what they mean and that Vigilante never fails to understand, however, is Peacemaker, who Adrian still regards as his best friend. Vigilante vows to continue his search while accidentally squeezing the condom’s contents onto his costume.

Despite the complete ick of the situation, Adrian notes a distinct odor coming from the condom. He notes that there are hints of cool ranch andVigilante recalls how there’s only one company that made a flavored condom with that particular flavor. Having deduced where the prophylactic came from, Vigilante heads out to confront Cannon and Saber. Meanwhile, Scarapelli and Withers, Cannon and Saber’s respective employers, are tied up in the warehouse of the failed condom business, reflecting on being betrayed by their bodyguards.

Vigilante’s Hero Worship of Peacemaker Makes So Much Sense Now

He Values Smith’s Unfiltered Bluntness More Than Anything Else

Vigilante is an odd duck with a disturbing murder streak running through him, but it’s clear that he has problems relating to most people. He takes things literally a lot and has trouble identifying sarcasm or exaggeration. But the one person who almost always says what he means (even if it’s unprofessional, mean, or just plain gross), it’s Peacemaker. That’s not to say he never lies to Vigilante, but Smith is generally pretty frank with Adrian, andfor someone who needs clarity, Vigilante appreciates that.

… it is overseen by show creator James Gunn, so one could reasonably say this applies to the DCU Vigilante as well.

Peacemaker and Vigilante don’t exactly have a healthy dynamic (pretty much nothing associated with Vigilante can be described as ‘healthy’). That being said, this little bit of introspection clears up things with Vigilante and really broadens his character. While this story isn’t 100% canon toPeacemakeror the DCU, it is overseen by show creator James Gunn, so one could reasonably say this applies to the DCU Vigilante as well. It’s a brief moment, but it really does a good job of explaining whyVigilanteworshipsPeacemakerso much.

Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante / Eagly Double Feature #4is available from DC Comics on June 25th.
