The pictorial matter were n’t created using a camera , but his own bacteria , naturalise on the gelatin surface of film negative . He explains :
“ I have gathered the bacteria samples from my own body . The bacteria waste the film surface acquire photographic simulacrum that are entirely created by a chance . I have been removed from the physical process but , at the same clip , the images are a Cartesian product of my body ; ego - portrayal . ”
