Def Jam: Fight forNYmay be a couple of console generations old at this point, but the game is still remembered fondly as one of the best fighting games of its era. Unfortunately,Def Jam: Iconwas met with a lukewarm reception, and stopped the franchise’s momentum dead in its tracks. However, it seems as though the official Twitter page for Def Jam Recordings has started teasing a direct followup toDef Jam: Fight for NY.
The teases started in late June, when the Twitter page posted an image of the box art forDef Jam: Vendetta, the first game in the series. The image was posted with a question asking fans who they would like to see on the cover if a hypothetical new game in the series was ever produced. The latest tease came earlier today, with the Def Jam Recordings Twitter page posing an image revealing various cities the next game in the series could take place.
The cities in question are Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami. Of course, this is far from official confirmation that any of these games are actually in development. Having said that, it’s odd that Def Jam Recordings keeps teasing a new game in theDef Jamseries if it has no plans to actually pursue a sequel.
Perhaps these tweets are Def Jam’s way of gauging fan interest in a new game. And if so, the response on Twitter should be an indication that fans are indeed interested in a proper followup toDef Jam: Fight for NY.
If a newDef Jamgame is put into production, one has to wonder who would be on its roster. Past games featured a roster of fighters mostly made up of recording artists signed to the Def Jam label, and assuming a sequel would follow suit, that means we could potentially have the likes of Nas andJustin Bieberin a fighting game together.
And if a newDef Jamgame is made, willElectronic Artsbe involved? It’s hard to say at this point, but hopefully the hypotheticalDef Jamsequel gets off the ground.
Def Jam: Fight for NYis available now for PS2, PSP, GameCube, and Xbox.
