Donning a VR headset can be awonderfully immersive experience , if you’re able to look past the pel . But new research by Nvidia suggests that simply stack two LCD system of rules in front of your eyes can quadruple their pixel density . That could make Oculus Rift — and more significantly , itscheaper DIY competitors — way more immersive .
The problem with VR headset is that your eyes are frightfully close-fitting to the screen , and even the skillful smartphone display do n’t pack pixels closely enough for them to seem inconspicuous at that range . Instead , reports Technology Review , Nvidia has decided to exploit the fact that LCD panels use an raiment of tiny shutters to control the visibility of single pixels , for up solvent . lend an extra array of shutters over a full LCD panel of the same design , but just fractionally offset compared to the one below , allows the researchers to divide the pel of the base display into four minuscule area . Those are the new four pixel , where previously there existed just one , and the result is what ’s known as a cascaded display . you could see how it ferment in the video below .
The downside : luminosity is fall , because the light has to excrete through more components to reach your heart . The monolithic upshot : the pixel density quadruples , and the brightness is less of an issue in a VR headset anyway . There is , of course of action , the matter of making sure that the images looks correct — opening move and closing two storey of shutter can do unusual things to brightness across the presentation — but Nvidia has developed some math to translate normal video feeds for the hardware , and is even trying to force high frames rates out of the engineering too .
Of course , this a reasonably decadent advance in what remains a niche sector , at least for now . But it also paves the way for really convincing immersive VR . And that is something to get really frantic about . [ Technology Review ]
