Across seven season of Riverdale a lot ofbonkers shit went down . Archiesleeping with his teacherin the premiere would at last be one of the most normal thing to encounter on a show that turn Cheryl Blossom into acomet - stopping witch , did fourth dimension travel andsuper powers , flung multiple instructor out the same windowpane , and had that whole furore inthe Rei Ayanami fitfor a hot second . But while on the outside looking in this might have seemed like humorous desperation , by the end the cast and crew were all rolling with it .
Speaking about the conclusion of the series after it premiered this week — which , among other things , confirmed that Archie , Jughead , Betty , and Veronica resolve their sexual love triangle government issue by simply becoming a polycule — withVariety , Berlanti Productions chair and Riverdale executive producer Sarah Schechter reflected on just how and why Riverdale went from Maple Syrup Maffia to time travelling fiend cults and serial killer genes .
Her answer , perhaps much like Riverdale itself , hit a broad spectrum of absurdity . First , there ’s the logic — Riverdale is a rare modern written drama with 24 - installment seasons , and when you have that kind of chance you have the distance to go furious . “ This show is such a testament to the variety of Roberto ’s passions . Roberto [ Aguirre - Sacasa , Riverdale Almighty and Archie Comics CCO ] is a lot like audience today who love revulsion moving-picture show and comedy and action , ” Schechter mused . “ The approximation that masses only like one kind of thing is not lawful . I think there ’s a modernity to it that is really interesting , and will be interesting to look back on . ”

“ I also just think that the figure of episodes we got to make — to make them in a time where we had a really warm , experienced writers ’ way that were on set , bring about episode , getting to do it the actors — speaks to how the show evolved , changed and grew . In build so many episode , you’re able to play . you may have sport . ”
Then , there ’s the acknowledgement of some of the early slides into absurdity , like that time in season three where Archie fought a literal bear ( “ The bear was — it was around The Revenant , ” Schecter explained . “ Bears are good storytelling equipment ” ) . And then , lastly , the acceptance .
“ The joy and the vast perquisite of doing a show for seven year was watch this cast grow up . I reckon they all pass through it [ differently ] , ” Schechter concluded . “ I think in time of year two , Cole [ Sprouse ] was like , ‘ But why ? ’ By time of year six , everyone was like , ‘ Yep , OK ! ’ Everyone got on board . Even Camila [ Mendes ] at one point in time , I was telling her something , and she just shrugged her shoulder like , “ Yep , it ’s Riverdale ! ’ ”

And god consecrate them for it . There ’ll never be another show like Riverdale — arguably , perhaps there should n’t be . But while it was here , you could never accuse if of not goingfor the most .
