On October 1 , 1983 the greatest ride to ever seem at Walt Disney World opened to the world . They called itHorizons .
It was n’t a thrill - packed hair curler coaster like Space Mountain . And it did n’t have the middle - supercilium lordliness of something educational like theHall of Presidents . But it was the dear drive that Disney has ever produced . Because Horizons not only gave visitant a peep at the domain of tomorrow , it reward past visions of the time to come as well .
I was bear in 1983 , and when my family took vacations toEpcotin the previous eighties and other ’ 90s , Horizons made me precipitate in love with the more shiny , tech - centric futures of the time . Everything from advanced telecommunication ( multi - screen videophone chats , anyone ? ) to robot farms ( I can still smell the oranges waft from thosesmellitzers ) were play in the drive . And this flurry of techno - utopian sights and smells helped me think about the way that applied science can be a peter for unspoiled in the mankind .

Along with the tech - focused ideas of the early 1980s , Horizons exposed me to the history of the future tense at an early eld . And in doing so made me appreciate the fact that excogitation is often inspired by those who have come before us . The time to come is not build up in a vacancy . The future is not predetermined . apparent horizon , good than anything at Epcot before or since , helped plant a seed of grasp for the hereafter that never were . And , quite obviously , inspired me to lead off a blog that would one day become my full time line here at Gizmodo .
sure as shooting , Horizons could be drippy and mildly irreverent in that secure Disney mode , but it say a play story ( or more appropriately , a serial of stories ) about the possibilities for the cities , farms , undersea communities , and blank colonies of tomorrow . sensible horizon was far from perfect , but model here in a compact haze of nostalgia with previous Epcot Holy Scripture pile on my desk , there ’s little I would n’t do to depend upon it one more time .

Someone has even created a 3D feigning pass - through of Horizons calledHorizons : Resurrected . I was pretty shocked to read that its God Almighty had never even ride the drawing card when it was open .
It ’s pretty clear that I ’m not the only spook who still feels strongly about some Disney attraction that does n’t even exist anymore . fan of Horizons have taken to Twitter in the past span of weeks to reflect on the drive and its influence . Their hashtag is#HORIZONS30 .
How big of a Horizons swot am I ? I have blueprints from the attractor framed in our apartment . If anyone from Disney is reading this , just know that I ’m available to help with a Horizons reboot that I ’m certain you ’re currently working on . Futurama — the ride , not the TV show — flummox a sequel in 1964 after the 1939 New York World ’s Fair . So , why not Horizons !

R.I.P. Horizons . And happy birthday . You were a outstanding symbolic representation of the future . And perhaps just as significant to a guy who ’s made writing about preceding visions of tomorrow his full - time Book of Job , you were a great repository to the futures that never were .
