It’s been a great year for Nintendo so far, as its latest console, the Switch, has been a massive success thanks in large part to monthly AAA releases likeThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,Splatoon 2, and thesurprise hit from Ubisoft,Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. With October now right around the corner, Nintendo is preparing its biggest Switch title yet withSuper Mario Odyssey, which has Mario traveling to all sorts of unique locations. One such level, the sprawling metropolis known as New Donk City, got some time in the spotlight through a new gameplay video.
The gameplay trailer, which comes from GAME, shows five minutes of New Donk City open world gameplay fromSuper Mario Odyssey. After arriving to the city, Mario’s first quest is to meet up with the mayor, who players may notice is actually Pauline from the oldDonkey Kongarcade games. Instead of progressing through the quest, the player opts to run around the open world collecting special purple coins, finding a hidden bonus stage, and even climbing the biggest tower in the city.
While Nintendo went all out to promote the game at E3 2017, the gameplay also features a great look at a number of new mechanics for the game, includingMario’s ability to capture people, enemies, and even inanimate objects. The player roams the open city, throwing Mario’s hat at nearly anything and everything. Surprisingly, Mario is able to capture things like sewer covers, traffic cones, and even a person playing with a small RC car. Clearly, Nintendo has made sure to pack each level with plenty of objects for players to uncover using this hat-based ability.
While there’s still plenty of secrets for players to uncover for themselves, Nintendo has confirmed a number of interesting changes to the longtime formula. The biggest change toSuper Mario Odysseyis that the gamewon’t have a game over screen, something which shocked the community considering how much of a staple its been since the very beginning. Instead of displaying a fail state when Mario loses his health, the game simply respawns the plumber and removes 10 coins.
Super Mario Odysseylaunches on October 27th, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
