Shortly after the launch ofPixel Watch 2, Google quietly downgraded the original Pixel Watch’s charging speed. Presumably, the reduced charging speed is meant to prevent overheating, which can physically harm users and may damage the Pixel Watch’s battery or adhesive binding. This change was made during a routine firmware update and was not communicated to customers.
Previously, the first-gen Pixel Watch could charge from 0% to 100% in just 80 minutes. A full charge now takes 110 minutes. Fast charging to 80% used to take 55 minutes, but it now requires 75 minutes. And a 50% charge has been extended from half an hour to 45 minutes. These numbers are based on thePixel Watch specs page, which was recently updated by Google. The Pixel Watch 2, which already charged faster than its predecessor, uses a new pin-mechanism charging connector and is unaffected by this update.
In response to a query from9to5Google, Google states that the latest Pixel Watch update “required us to review the charging times.” The company does not provide an explanation for the downgraded charging speed. Again, overheating is our best guess—the Pixel Watch tends to get hot while charging. Some users believe that this heat can damage the Pixel Watch’s adhesive and forcethe watch’s backplateto fall off. However, Google may simply be concerned for customers' physical safety, as it’s only been a year since theFitbit Ionic was recalledfor posing a “burn hazard.”
As noted byAndroid Police, most Pixel Watch usersseem unfazedby this change. They’re happy that the Pixel Watch stays cool while charging, and that’s about it. One owner says that “the timing just makes it look awful,” which is the real crux of the matter. Downgrading an expensive product after launching its successor isn’t going to win Google any fans.
If your Pixel Watch still gets hot while charging, swipe down from the top of its screen and tap the gear icon to open Settings. Then, scroll down, select “System,” and tap “System Updates.” This will force your Pixel Watch to check for the latest firmware updates. I do not suggest skipping this update, as it should extend the lifespan of your Pixel Watch (and your Pixel Watch will attempt to update automatically at some point anyway).
