With the upcoming release ofDragonflight,World of Warcraftwill be ushering in its ninth expansion since the game was released in 2004. While many expansions were generally well-received by theWorld of Warcraftcommunity, others have been the source of major controversy, with opinions varying wildly on exactly which version of the game should be considered as its zenith. Generally, players fit into one of two camps: those that prefer the older versions of the game and praise the earliest expansions, and those that have welcomed—and continue to welcome—the massive changes thatWorld of Warcrafthas instituted over the years.
In an effort to satisfy both groups, Blizzard ushered in the creation ofWorld of Warcraft Classicto please the former group and has continued full-steam ahead for retail players, but each expansion’s merit has to be measured with the entirety of theWorld of Warcraftplayer base in mind. As thepre-expansion events forDragonflightget underway, it’s a perfect time to look back and compare each expansion over the years.
